What Is Calcific Tendonitis Of The Shoulder? How Do You Treat it?
When calcium deposits build up in your muscles or tendons, it can cause a condition called calcific tendonitis. The most common area affected by calcific tendonitis is the rotator cuff, a group of muscles and tendons that connects your upper arm to your shoulder. Calcium buildup in this area can cause pain and discomfort and restrict the range of motion in your arm. Pain in the front or back of the shoulder is the most common symptom of calcific tendonitis. It may build up slowly or come on suddenly. Calcific tendonitis can usually be treated with a combination of medication and physical therapy. Surgery may be necessary in some cases.
Once a shoulder has been dislocated, the chances of recurrence are high, especially in younger athletes. Being consistent with the prescribed strength and stability exercises may reduce the likelihood of future dislocations.
In cases where therapy is not enough to prevent repeated occurrences, surgery may be required to repair or tighten the tissues that hold the joint in place.
